Graduate students in the University of Alaska Fairbanks College of Engineering and Mines will now be able to apply for research grants for advanced studies in geotechnical and environmental engineering with the endowment of a scholarship fund from Shannon & Wilson, Inc., a local geotechnical and environmental engineering consulting firm.

The $50,000 endowment will allow one or two graduate students each year to receive grants to further their course of studies in geotechnical and environmental engineering. Funds can be used for program fees or tuition, materials and supplies for research, publication expenses for preparing and circulating articles and papers resulting from graduate research, travel to conferences, and other expenses as approved by the dean.

“Being ‘technically the best’ is a fundamental goal of Shannon & Wilson,” company president Gerard Buechel said. “As a longstanding member of the Alaska community, Shannon & Wilson values the work UAF accomplishes in this regard, and we cherish their graduates as employees. UAF and their graduates help us advance the technical expertise in our company. We hope our gift further demonstrates and strengthens our commitment to the UAF.”

Shannon & Wilson, Inc., has been offering geotechnical and environmental consulting services in Alaska since 1974.

“Shannon & Wilson has partnered with the UAF College of Engineering and Mines for many years and this generous gift is a wonderful result of that partnership,” CEM dean Doug Goering, said. “The funding will allow us to enhance the research support we can provide to our graduate students working in Geotechnical and Environmental Engineering, very active research areas in our college. We are very appreciative of this contribution and will put it to work right away supporting our graduate student researchers.”
