CEM undergraduates attend GSA & AMA meetings

Six Mining and Geological Engineering undergraduates recently attended national and statewide meetings associated with
the geological engineering field.
Sarah Rife, Aaron Kruse and Justin Thomas attended the Geological Society of America
annual conference in Charlotte, N.C., Nov. 4 - 7. Their attendance was sponsored by
the Mining and Geological Engineering department through the AEG student chapter.
The students took part in a wide variety of presentations on cutting-edge research.
Some of the lectures included information on groundwater issues, slope stability and
research being done by NASA on Mars. Each of the students left the conference with
a greater understanding of their field of study, a chance for professional development
and a scope to plan their future career direction.
Yan Miao, Matthew Blake and Michael Magnan attended the Alaska Miners Association
semi-annual meeting held in Anchorage Nov. 5 - 11. The students saw presentations
by field professionals working in mining and geology, including how those have helped
enhance mining in Alaska. Their attendance allowed them to gain helpful insight into
the mining world, work on their professional development and continue planning their
future career goals. The students also talked with many of the professionals at their
exposition booths to discuss possible internships and mining in Alaska.
