Former UAF employee and Fairbanks community icon William Shechter passed away Feb. 26, 2013 due to an unexpected medical event. Shechter worked for the UAF Fire Department starting in 1970 as a student firefighter and rose through the ranks, eventually achieving the role of fire chief. He worked for more than 20 years at UAF. During his lengthy career, Chief Shechter served in a variety of leadership roles, including president of the Alaska Fire Chiefs Association, Interior Fire Chiefs Association, City of Fairbanks Fire Department, and Fairbanks North Star Borough Director of Emergency Operations. He remained active until his death, serving on the local fire service area commission, hospital board, Kiwanis and Friends of the Tanana Railroad. His many contributions will be greatly missed. Please extend your condolences, prayers, and thoughts of comfort and peace to his wife Patty, sons Todd and David, daughter Jen and the extended family.

The funeral services are scheduled to take place Saturday, March 9 at Sacred Heart Cathedral. Attendees will adjourn to station 2 for a reception hosted by the University Fire Department.
