The Beat Beethoven 5K race, the Fairbanks Symphony's 23rd annual springtime fundraiser, will start at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 15.

Early bird race registrations for $25 will be accepted until 11:59 p.m. Monday, April 10. Registration prices go up after that.

The race, which starts and ends in front of University of Alaska Fairbanks' Patty Center, makes a loop around around the campus. Last year, the race had over 1,000 registered runners and walkers, a new record for the race.

Racers try to cross the finish line before the music of Beethoven's Fifth Symphony ends — about 31 minutes. Runners are able to hear the music courtesy of volunteers with radios positioned along the race route. UAF's KSUA-FM 91.5 will broadcast a performance of Beethoven's Fifth recorded by the Fairbanks Symphony Orchestra. The station will also broadcast some spirited and rousing music before the race and after Beethoven's music is done.

At the race, Don Kiely will dress as Beethoven and act as the pacer. You can beat Beethoven if you stay ahead of him! Those who do beat Beethoven to the finish line will receive a voucher good for a ticket to a concert next season.

Race bib and T-shirt pickup is scheduled for April 10 from 5-7 p.m. at the Patty Center lobby, where you may also register for the race. All other registrations should be made online at the symphony's website: www.fairbankssymphony.org/beat-beethoven-5k. Late registration, from midnight April 11 through 11:59 p.m. April 14, costs $35. Race-day registration is $45. Race T-shirts are included in the registration, while supplies last.

Not a runner? The race can always use more volunteers to line the race route with portable or automobile radios. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact the Fairbanks Symphony office at 474-5852 for an assigned location for you and your vehicle.
