Anchorage Extension to host centennial events

The Anchorage district office of the University of Alaska Fairbanks Cooperative Extension Service will host more than two dozen free community classes Aug. 11–16 as part of its Centennial Connections Week.
Classes will cover everything from keeping moose out of gardens to bed bug basics.
The week will mark the 100th anniversary of the Cooperative Extension Service, which Congress established in 1914 to extend practical, university-based knowledge to the people. DeShana York, the Anchorage district director, said the week will also celebrate connections with the Anchorage area. Extension agents and staff, master gardeners and other community partners will teach the classes.
Topics will include food preservation, identifying and using Alaska’s wild berries, raising peonies for fun and profit, gardening, wood stove operation, powerhouse vegetables, fall tree care, agricultural history, weed control and more. The Alaska Master Gardeners Anchorage will host a late summer garden and art sale outside the district office from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 16. The sale will include hardy perennials, native plants, berries and rhubarb.
