The Alaska Summer Research Academy at the University of Alaska Fairbanks is accepting applications through Feb. 28, 2013 for its day-only program for middle school students in June and its residential program for high school students in July.

Students accepted into the summer program will spend two weeks with a small group and two instructors exploring a topic in science, engineering, math or technology. There are 17 modules covering topics such as archaeology, marine biology, veterinary medicine, food science and robotics. Students have opportunities for hands-on activities, whether it means visiting and excavating a real archaeology site, traveling to southern Alaska to look at sea life, giving a reindeer a physical exam or a behind-the-scenes look at the Fairbanks Memorial Hospital emergency room. Each group studies a different topic and topics vary by age.

The College of Natural Science and Mathematics hosts the program through its outreach department. UAF faculty members, graduate students, K-12 teachers and industry professionals instruct the programs.

The middle school program will run during the day from June 3 - 14 and students going into grades sixth, seventh and eighth may apply. The high school residential program will run July 15 - 26, and students entering ninth grade or those already in high school may apply. The application deadline is Feb. 28, 2013.
