LAST WEEK: Blue and Gold Run Fest vs. UAA | THIS WEEK: at Ash Creek Invite (Sept. 6)
The Alaska Nanooks men’s and women’s cross country running teams kicked off the 2019 season last Saturday, hosting in-state rival Alaska Anchorage in a head-to-head battle at the UAF trails. The Nooks fell in the women’s 5k race 17-39, while the men dropped the 7k race 17-41 to UAA. Alaska will continue the regular season in Monmouth, Oregon, this week, competing in the Ash Creek Invitational hosted by Western Oregon this Friday, Sept. 6. The women’s 4k race will take place at 4:15 p.m. Alaska time, while the men’s 6k race is slated for 4:45 p.m. at the Ash Creek Preserve.

LAST WEEK: vs. Alumni | THIS WEEK: at 2019 Oredigger Classic (Sept. 6-7)
The Alaska Nanooks volleyball team officially starts regular season play for the 2019 season this weekend, competing in the Oredigger Classic hosted by the Colorado School of Mines in Golden, Colorado this Friday, Sept. 6, and Saturday, Sept. 7. The Nooks will take on the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs (9 a.m. Alaska time) and Northern State (noon Alaska time) on Friday, before facing Fresno Pacific (7:30 a.m. Alaska time) and the Colorado School of Mines (9:30 a.m. Alaska time) on Saturday. The 2019 Oredigger Classic also includes Colorado Mesa, Dallas Baptist and Lubbock Christian.

Alaska Nanooks athletics open house
The Alaska Nanooks Department of Athletics is hosting an open house at the Patty Center this Friday, Sept. 6, from 5-7:30 p.m. Guests will be able to meet the 2019-2020 Alaska student-athletes, mingle with coaches and staff, discuss items with UAF leadership, meet new administrative staff and coaches, and tour the facilities. The self-guided tour will allow guests to visit the new varsity weight room, the E.F. Horton Rifle Range, the Patty pool deck, the Alaska Airlines Court and the newly renovated locker rooms for men’s basketball, women’s basketball, and men’s and women’s cross country running and Nordic skiing.

Mascot tryouts
The Alaska Nanooks will be hosting mascot tryouts at the Patty Center on Friday, Sept. 13, at 2 p.m. Anyone is welcome to try out, as it is a paid employee position. Being Nook requires work during the weekends and some school breaks and holidays. Sports knowledge and cheerleading or dance experience is recommended but not required. Alaska Nanooks cross country picked ninth in GNAC preseason coaches poll
Last week, the Alaska Nanooks men’s and women’s cross country running teams were both picked to finish ninth in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference 2019 preseason cross country coaches poll. The Alaska women’s team finished the 2018 season in ninth place with 246 points, along with the Nanook men, who tallied 261 points. Read more here.
