Srijan Aggarwal, a researcher at the College of Engineering and Mines, has received a prestigious award from the National Science Foundation.

The NSF Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) Program recognizes early-career faculty that have a strong potential to show leadership in their field by integrating education and research.

The award will allow Aggarwal, an assistant professor of civil and environmental engineering, to embark on a five-year research project to investigate the bacterial biofilm that coats water pipes. The issue can cause serious problems in drinking water distribution systems. His study aims to gain a better knowledge of the structure and strength of attachment of biofilms, and how to remove them. Results from this research have the potential to provide utilities and water plants with new strategies for the removal of biofilms and to ensure the availability of safe drinking water for the public.
