Srijan AggarwalSrijan Aggarwal, UAF assistant professor of civil and environmental engineering, has received the 2018 Early-Career Research Fellowship from the Gulf Research Program of the National Academies of Science, Engineering and Medicine.

Aggarwal was one of 20 faculty members across the country awarded the fellowship Wednesday, Aug. 29.

The National Academies fellowship recognizes exceptional pre-tenure professionals working to improve safety, human health or environmental stewardship in offshore energy systems in the Gulf of Mexico and other U.S. coastal regions. Each fellow receives an award of $76,000, paid to his or her institution as a two-year grant for research expenses and professional development.

Aggarwal, with UAF's Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering since 2013, specializes in environmental engineering. He studies, among other things, the application, environmental fate and impacts of oil spill response chemicals in the Arctic region. In 2014, he worked on an joint industry-funded project at UAF that investigated the aerial application of chemical herders to help burn any future Arctic oil spills in place. Recently, Aggarwal received a 2018 Faculty Early Career Development Program award from the National Science Foundation to support his research on biofilms in drinking water distribution systems.
