Adam Low has been appointed the new director of Upward Bound by the Division of General Studies. Low first joined UAF’s Upward Bound program in April 2019 as assistant director, and has been serving as acting director since October 2020.

Low is a science and technology educator with a passion for involving students in community engagement projects. He was named science teacher of the year for the state of Alaska in 2008.

Low has extensive experience developing and supporting curriculum to connect STEM technologies and service-learning as part of both the T3 Alliance and Modern Blanket Toss National Science Foundation grants. He has directed a maker space as a teacher at a charter school, supported an online school based on cultural and environmental learning in Hawaii, has taught in the classroom in rural Alaska, and has worked as a professional geologist.

Upward Bound is a federally funded nationwide TRiO program that uses after-school programming in partnership with 10 high schools in Alaska, as well as a six-week residential on-campus summer program, to encourage students to pursue higher education. The program serves 160 low-income first-generation college students who demonstrate potential for academic success and whose parents have not earned college degrees.
