Interior residents who want to improve their gardening skills can now sign up for master gardener training that begins March 2 in Fairbanks.

Classes will meet from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesdays, through June 15, at the University of Alaska Fairbanks Cooperative Extension district office at 724 27th Ave., in the Fairbanks Community Food Bank building.

State horticulture specialist Steven Seefeldt and Darcy Etcheverry, an agriculture program aide, will teach the course. Participants will receive 40 hours of instruction on horticultural subjects and gardening skills suited for Interior Alaska. Master gardeners then contribute 40 hours of volunteer service to their communities within two years of completing the class.

The fee of $300 includes materials and a copy of an Alaska gardening manual. Individuals may register online, at the district office in Fairbanks or by mail.
