Beat Beethoven logoThe Fairbanks Symphony Orchestra is hosting its 24th annual Beat Beethoven 5K race Saturday, April 14, at 11 a.m. on the Fairbanks campus. The race route makes a loop around campus, starting and ending in front of the Patty Center. There is plenty of free parking in the area on race day.

Registration is happening now. Early bird registration ($25) ends Monday, April 9, at midnight. The race bib and T-shirt pickup will also be April 9, from 5-7 p.m. in the Patty Center lobby. Late registration ($35) runs through midnight on Friday, April 13. Race day registration is $45. Race T-shirts are included in the registration fee while supplies last.

The premise of this unique and fun race is to cross the finish line before the end of Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony (as recorded by the Fairbanks Symphony Orchestra). The UAF student-run radio station, KSUA, will broadcast the music on FM 91.5. Keith Pollock, dressed as Ludwig van Beethoven, will act as the pace man for the race, so as long as you stay in front of him, you will Beat Beethoven! The reward for beating Beethoven is a voucher for a free ticket to a concert during the FSO’s 2018-2019 concert season! For youngsters who complete the race, Healthy Futures is again awarding medals at the end of the race chute.

Not a runner? This fundraising event can always use more volunteers to line the race route with portable or automobile radios. To volunteer, contact the Fairbanks Symphony office at 474-5852 or grydlinski@alaska.edu for an assigned location for you and your vehicle during the race.
