Veteran journalist Robert Meyerowitz will speak about his experiences covering politics around the world in a free public lecture, "Can You See The Real Me? Covering Politics from Panama to Palin," Wednesday, Oct. 29 at 7 p.m. in the Morris Thompson Cultural and Visitors Center auditorium.

Meyerowitz’ journalism career has spanned two decades, beginning as a reporter for an alternative weekly newspaper and public radio station in Rochester, N.Y. From there, he worked as a reporter for the Associated Press in Nicaragua and as a National Public Radio contributor covering the civil war in El Salvador, the U.S. invasion of Panama and hunt for Manuel Noriega, elections and daily life in Cuba, Guatemala, Honduras and Haiti, as well as the first Gulf War from Jerusalem. In 1994, he moved to Alaska to work at the Anchorage Daily News for three years before accepting a position as editor of the Anchorage Press. After seven years at the Press, he worked as editor of the Honolulu Weekly and the New Times Broward-Palm Beach before returning to Alaska to serve as the 2008-2009 Charles W. Snedden Chair in Journalism at the University of Alaska Fairbanks journalism department. He has also been a stringer and freelancer for many other media outlets and has received dozens of awards from the Alaska Press Club and the Society for Professional Journalists.

Helen Snedden established the Snedden Chair in 2003 in memory of her late husband, the former publisher and owner of the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner. Since its establishment, the chair has allowed the UAF journalism department to bring a series of nationally known journalists to Fairbanks to speak to students, local journalists and the public.
