Planetary geologist to speak at UAF

Planetary geologist Paul Spudis will speak about current U.S. efforts to increase lunar exploration on Thursday, Oct. 16 at 7 p.m. in Schaible Auditorium at the University of Alaska Fairbanks.

Spudis’ lecture, "The Moon: A New Destination for Humanity," is free and open to the public. Spudis will address how scientists hope to use moon exploration to develop the skills and technological resources needed by humans to live and work on other planets.

Spudis is a staff scientist at the Lunar and Planetary Institute in Houston, Texas. Since 1982, he has been a principal investigator in the Planetary Geology and Geophysics Program of the NASA Office of Space Science, Solar System Exploration Division specializing in research on the processes of impact and volcanism on the planets. He has served on NASA’s Lunar and Planetary Sample Team, the Lunar Exploration Science Working Group and the Planetary Geology Working Group.

Spudis is the author or co-author of more than 150 scientific papers and three books, including "The Once and Future Moon," a book for the public in the Smithsonian Library of the Solar System series, and the co-author of "The Clementine Atlas of the Moon," published in 2004 by Cambridge University Press.
