University of Alaska Fairbanks Chancellor Brian Rogers has appointed Jennifer "Jennie" Carroll as acting vice chancellor of rural, community and Native education. Carroll will oversee the College of Rural and Community Development from Aug. 1, 2008 - July 31, 2009 while Bernice Joseph takes professional leave of absence to pursue a doctoral degree.

Carroll began working for UAF’s Interior-Aleutians Campus in 1999 as an anthropology instructor and coordinator of the Yukon Flats Center in Fort Yukon. During that time enrollment at the center increased by more than 40 percent and an economic development grant made it possible to double the size of the facility. After moving back to Fairbanks in 2005, she worked as a faculty member and program manager for I-AC before taking a position in the CRCD vice chancellor’s office as interim associate dean of academics in 2007.

Carroll earned a bachelor’s degree from Harvard University in 1990 and a master’s degree from UAF in 1995. She is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in anthropology from UAF. She is a 1986 graduate of Lathrop High School and is married to James Carroll of Fort Yukon. They have two daughters, Jeanetta and Lynneva.

Sixty-eight percent of UAF students are enrolled in at least one CRCD course. CRCD includes the Tanana Valley Campus in Fairbanks and sister campuses in Nome, Bethel, Kotzebue and Dillingham, Interior-Aleutian centers in Galena, Fort Yukon, Tok, Unalaska, McGrath and Nenana, as well as the Center for Distance Education and Independent Learning located in Fairbanks.
