This week, I spent a night in Anchorage between meetings at the Alaska Energy Authority and University of Alaska Anchorage. Wednesday morning at the hotel I ate a biscuit, egg, cheese and sausage breakfast sandwich. I was reminded that the people will often invoke the saying "you don't want to know how the sausage is made" when discussing the legislative budget process. This made me think about our budget process at UAF and how far from sausage-making it is. For starters, it is something that we not only want you to know about, but encourage you to participate in!

NASA awards Alaska Satellite Facility five-year, $70 million contract

Welcome to budget season! When the academic year ends and most students head home for the summer, the ramp-up for fiscal year close-out (and restart) begins. Although you may not see it because this work is often behind the scenes, there is a flurry of activity for fiscal professionals this time of year. If you pass by your fiscal or procurement office and the person there (or online) looks frazzled, thank them for their efforts and help keep them motivated! The deadlines are fast approaching and the pace to keep up means many folks are scheduling their summer vacations around these closing and opening fiscal activities to ensure it all gets done on time. Things are always bustling at the end of each fiscal year as fiscal staff are working round the clock to close out accounts, create budgets for the new fiscal year, and clean up any last-minute financial pieces that support staff, faculty, and students. Meanwhile, most students are on a break exploring what life has to offer while our student athletes enjoy some time off from their busy seasons. Faculty are teaching summer courses, doing community outreach, and conducting cutting-edge research from here at Troth Yeddha' campus to all the way in Antarctica. Administrators and other staff are planning for the upcoming fiscal/academic year and working hard on all of the things that make UAF an amazing university and a place of belonging. With the business of fiscal year-end, I wanted to take a minute and thank all the staff, faculty and students for all you do.

Polar bears of the past survived warmth

Friday Focus: Thinking big - our path to R1

In 2018, I was invited by Chancellor White to lead UAF's strategic planning goal to "Achieve R1 research status." At the time I was relatively new faculty and knew little about the Carnegie Classification's Very High Research status university ranking (R1). I was also used to working within my own discipline and focused on my own research. Achieving R1 status was a big idea that, like many other faculty on campus, I had difficulty wrapping my brain around! Together, with a team of faculty, staff, and students from across UAF, we learned what it means to be an R1 university, how R1 would benefit UAF, and how UAF could achieve that goal.

At UAF, we have a lot to celebrate. Last week we celebrated the accomplishments of our graduating class at UAF's 101st commencement ceremony. The evening before, we conferred honorary doctorates, meritorious service awards and emeritus status to retiring faculty and staff in a ceremony at the Davis Concert Hall. To top off an exciting week, last night we held our signature fundraiser -- the Chancellor's Blue and Gold Celebration in the UAF Troth Yeddha' campus student union. Our community came together to recognize the Emil Usibelli Teaching, Research and Service awardees and raise funds to support student scholarships. That evening, donors gave over $435,000 to student scholarships, including a generous gift of $350,000 from Kinross Alaska!

UAF IT outage coming in May 2023

In May 2023, contractors will install a new battery backup system in the Butrovich Building that serves the Butrovich Data Center. The new unit replaces a 25-year-old system that has aged out and become less reliable. The backup battery provides the data center with continuous power during an outage of the UAF power grid and with the new system in place, the project will substantially increase the center's reliability, resiliency, and up-time to support critical functions, academics, and business continuity.

Under former UA President Jim Johnsen, the UA goal was to have ~44,000 students, more than twice what we have now across the system. Under current UA President Pat Pitney, proposed enrollment growth is more modest, but the goal is to grow.

UAF Facilities Services planned preventative maintenance work at Combined Heat and Power Plant

In June 2023, UAF Facilities Services will perform planned preventative maintenance work at the Combined Heat and Power Plant. The work includes an annual inspection and cleaning of the boiler, steam turbine generator, and associated equipment to ensure reliable operations for the life of the power plant. Given the size of the plant, the work usually takes approximately three weeks to complete. During this period, FS Utilities will utilize alternate, backup power and heat sources to keep the Troth Yeddha' Campus operational.

Wicked problems such as climate change require complex and interdisciplinary solutions. As Mike Toman from the World Bank put it: "Climate change is an issue that presents great scientific and economic complexities, some very deep uncertainties, profound ethical issues, and even lack of agreement on what the problem is." Preparing students for interdisciplinary work while also acquiring deep knowledge is a goal of UAF and the College of Natural Science and Mathematics. Teams in CNSM and other colleges have developed programs that allow students, both undergraduates and graduates, to sharpen their interdisciplinary skills. The new Bachelor of Science in Climate and Environmental Change and the Earth Systems Science graduate programs provide new opportunities to students at UAF.

RCNE is unique within the University of Alaska structure which can make it challenging for some to understand our full scope. Since 2017, the RCNE unit has officially housed the Community and Technical College and the College of Rural and Community Development as two distinct colleges. Prior to that change, the unit was formerly known as the College of Rural Alaska which included many of the programs that served UAF's community college mission. RCNE has continued to grow and expand in recent years and so this week's Friday Focus is dedicated to sharing some of the notable highlights.

“Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam” is a Sanskrit phrase from ancient Indian scriptures that means the whole world is one (my) family. I grew up in India in a multigenerational household and had many aunts and uncles living in my neighborhood. It is hard to remember even a day when we did not have a relative or a friend stopping by and having a snack or meal with us. My concept and definition of a family was framed with these childhood visions, and went well beyond the typical legal definition of a family. It included relatives, family friends, and friends of friends. This vast familial network took care of each other and was vested in the success of every member. I could not be where I am today without the unconditional support of my family. Effective professional organizations are not different – they function like strong families.

Retired Army Maj. Gen. General Mark Hamilton was the University of Alaska president from 1998-2010. For those who know him, you know that he is a wonderfully gifted storyteller. As president, he lifted many up with stories he shared to which all could relate to their own lives in one way or another. It created a sense of belonging for many. Many of his stories were about leadership. One of my favorite stories he told at UAF was his great Americans story. At least that is what I call it. Friday Focus: Let's talk about accreditation

Did you know that the University of Alaska Fairbanks has been accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU) since 1934? But what does this mean? What is accreditation and why is it so important? Simply put, accreditation is a quality stamp - a stamp of assurance. For students, the stamp means they can trust UAF to provide a high standard of education imparted by qualified faculty. Students can also be assured of many opportunities and support services that are geared to set them up for overall success. For external employers, it means they do not have to second guess the quality of learning and preparation that comes with the academic degree from UAF. For faculty and staff, it means they are a part of an institution that is resourced to meet the standards necessary to receive accreditation. Accreditation also makes UAF eligible to receive federal financial aid as well as additional grant-funding.

We are here for the “wood drop” program organized by Aurora Energy Solutions, a subsidiary of Aurora Energy — the company that owns the 27.5-megawatt coal-fired power plant, right across the road, that supplies electricity to the greater Fairbanks area and heat in the form of steam to the downtown area.

Originally known as Armistice Day, the date was chosen to commemorate the armistice agreement which ended the First World War effective on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918. Just as this day is rooted in the end of that historic conflict, UAF's origins are tied to its beginning.

Although emergencies can be unpredictable, knowing what to do can help save lives.

As I have noted in at least one Friday Focus column before, I was raised in a small mining town in Colorado. Raised atop a pile of rounded river rock that was a gold mine sometime the century before. As a kid I searched for gold missed by the miners in the nooks and crannies of the ancient river bend. I also wandered the mountains checking the crumbled remains of abandoned 19th century cabins for gold pokes deserted by fate or misfortune. To no one's surprise, I never found a mason jar full of gold nuggets beneath the old rotting logs.

Friday Focus: Nuclear energy and UAF's role raising awareness via public engagement

Nuclear energy is not a new concept. After all, it makes up about 20 percent of our base-load energy supply in the U.S. To put this in context, this is roughly equivalent to all renewable energy generation combined, including hydroelectric. But with the vast majority of our fleet of nuclear reactors commissioned in the '60s and '70s, nuclear energy can feel like a technology of the past, especially when countries like Japan and Germany are actively working to decommission their own nuclear reactors. Nuclear energy is also a technology most people have strong - and sometimes quite visceral - reactions to. Proponents often see nuclear energy as a critical path to decarbonizing our global energy supply, while others legitimately worry about the environmental costs ranging from the potential of a nuclear accident to long-term management of spent fuel.

Responsible Conduct of Research training coming Nov. 1

The Sophie Sergie murder case finally concluded this week with the sentencing of Steven Downs. The case, while now closed, will always be part of our history and a reminder that UAF must remain vigilant. Occasionally when we address a disciplinary issue for misconduct at UAF, I am reminded that "we are a reflection of society" and our society is tragically affected by domestic violence, assault and discrimination. That said, we are also a powerful reflection of the good in our society and we have the ability to positively affect our future and the future of all who come here.

UAF making the switch to Canvas LMS

After a successful pilot in the 20-21 academic year followed by the adoption of Canvas in 2021-22 by the majority of our faculty, UAF is transitioning to Canvas as its new Learning Management System (LMS). Today, more than 77 percent of UAF LMS courses are being taught in Canvas. UAF drone pilots head to western Alaska for emergency response

Carter Johnson, current Ph.D. student in Fisheries, is focused on understanding interactions between sea otters and the Dungeness crab fishery in southeast Alaska. Sea otters were reintroduced to the area in the 1960s after decades of absence and as that population has grown, concerns have emerged around potential conflicts with fisheries.

Barn quilt to be displayed at Fairbanks Experiment Farm

The myriad of red and blue vertical bands makes a rainbow-like bar code representing Arctic temperatures from 1900 to 2021. The trend in the Arctic is remarkable. Every year since 1995 shows red, meaning that annual temperatures have been above average for nearly three decades.

988: Three-digit dialing code for Suicide and Crisis Lifeline goes live Saturday

On July 16, 2022, callers can dial 988 to connect to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline’s (the Lifeline) network of highly trained call center professionals. Those in Alaska who dial from a 907 area code will connect to Careline Alaska, where trained crisis counselors can provide confidential support 24 hours, 7 days a week.
