Apply to UAF Earth System Science (MS, PhD)

The application period for the ESS program is open from September 1 to January 15 for the following fall semester.

Students can apply to the ESS as a general degree or they can choose one of eight concentrations:

• Sustainability (SUS)
• Ecosystems (ECO)
• Hydrology (HYDRO)
• Atmospheric and Climate Sciences (ATM)
• Cryosphere (CRYO)
• Solid Earth Geophysics (SOLID)
• Geoscience (GEOS)
• Geospatial Science (GSP)

A student’s application to UAF ESS proceeds though one of six departments:

• Natural Resources and Environment (SUS, GSP)
• Center for Cross-Cultural Studies (SUS)
• Biology and Wildlife (ECO)
• Civil, Geological, and Environmental Engineering (HYDRO)
• Atmospheric Sciences (ATM)
• Geosciences (GEOS, CRYO, SOLID, GSP)

After reviewing the department-specific details, a student will complete the ESS Summary Form and then apply via UAF Admissions.

Applications with all documents required for a departmental review submitted by January 15th will be reviewed first. Applications that submit documents after this date are subject to “reviewed as needed”. Please see the departmental page for specific documents required for departmental review.
