UAF Chancellor Russ Vander Lugt

UAF alumnus Russ Vander Lugt serves as UAF’s 12th chancellor. Prior to joining UAF on Sept. 8, 2026, Vander Lugt served 26 years in the U.S. Army, most recently as brigade commander in the 11th Airborne Division at Fort Wainwright and as joint director of strategy and plans for the Alaskan Command.

Vander Lugt earned a doctorate in Arctic and Northern history from UAF, where his interdisciplinary research examined early encounters between the U.S. Army and Alaska Native communities. His work draws on history, security, anthropology and Indigenous knowledge systems, and reflects a longstanding commitment to collaboration with Alaska Native communities and regional partners. 

As part of his military service, he served as a department chair and assistant professor of military science at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and as an assistant professor of history at the U.S. Military Academy. In these roles, he taught courses in history and leadership, mentored undergraduate students, and participated in faculty governance. He also has a bachelor’s degree in music and historical theology from Wheaton College in Illinois, a master’s degree in management science from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and a master’s degree in Arctic and Northern studies from UAF.

Vander Lugt and his spouse, Rebekah, first came to Alaska in 2000; his family maintains deep ties throughout the state. His spouse and eldest son are also UAF alumni.
