Disciplines of Study
Course Delivery: In-person and Hybrid
UAF’s Interdisciplinary Studies Ph.D. program offers you the opportunity to shape
a dynamic curriculum that aligns with your unique goals and passions. This flexible
and innovative program allows you to design a doctoral degree that spans multiple
disciplines, going beyond the traditional offerings of the university. Administered
by the Graduate School and supported by expert faculty from every school and college
at UAF, this program fosters a collaborative environment where you’ll customize your
education to your specific path.
You'll complete a minimum of 36 credits across two or more fields, with at least 18
credits dedicated to thesis work and 9 credits focused on coursework, with no more
than half from one discipline. This tailored approach ensures that you gain comprehensive
expertise while making a distinct and original contribution to your chosen fields
of study.
Career Pathways
Ph.D. graduates will leverage their interdisciplinary degree to unlock new career opportunities, whether advancing within their current employment or securing a position in their chosen field. The program is designed to master foundational skills and knowledge in more than one background, opening doors to a broad range of career paths.
Student Focus Areas
Field Expertise
Acquire mastery of concepts and state of knowledge in your chosen disciplines, and understand interactions between these disciplines that define your subject area.
Communicate Findings
Make original and substantial contributions to knowledge in your field of study, which will be communicated in oral and written form.
Flexible Outcomes
Obtain employment in your chosen fields, advance within your existing employment, or otherwise meet personal objectives for completing the degree.
Student Opportunities
The Interdisciplinary Studies Ph.D provides the opportunity for you to develop a novel program based on your interests.
Work closely with leading UAF faculty in multiple fields of study and investigate interactions across disciplines.
While you're designing your Interdisciplinary Studies Ph.D. to fit your goals and interests, you'll also create a completion timeline fits your life.
Meet Yoko Kugo
Interdisciplinary Studies Ph.D. Student

Her work focuses on the importance of Indigenous place names in understanding and supporting the relationships between people and their environment. Kugo is truly a University of Alaska student, having come to UAF after completing her B.A. at UAS and an MA at UAA. During her M.A. studies, she had begun working with Yup’ik communities around Iliamna Lake to study their traditional and contemporary lifestyles. During that work, Elders in these communities shared their concern that their Yup’ik place names were in danger of being lost...
