UAF’s Interdisciplinary Studies Ph.D. program offers you the opportunity to shape a dynamic curriculum that aligns with your unique goals and passions. This flexible and innovative program allows you to design a doctoral degree that spans multiple disciplines, going beyond the traditional offerings of the university. Administered by the Graduate School and supported by expert faculty from every school and college at UAF, this program fosters a collaborative environment where you’ll customize your education to your specific path.

You'll complete a minimum of 36 credits across two or more fields, with at least 18 credits dedicated to thesis work and 9 credits focused on coursework, with no more than half from one discipline. This tailored approach ensures that you gain comprehensive expertise while making a distinct and original contribution to your chosen fields of study.

Research and Faculty

While working on your Interdisciplinary Studies Ph.D., you'll collaborate closely with a faculty mentor and have the freedom to build a degree plan that aligns with your passions. Your faculty mentor will act as your graduate advisor and will serve as the chair of your graduate advisory committee. When you start your program, you'll identify a faculty member who is able to work with you over the course of your degree. If you don’t know a faculty member, start by identifying programs at UAF that are in the disciplines you wish to combine in your studies. Take a look at UAF colleges, schools, institutes and research groups to get a feel for the type of research happening at UAF. You can find the biographies and interests of UAF faculty on the UAF Experts site.

Department Competitions
and Awards

Three Minute Thesis (3MT®) celebrates the exciting research and scholarship conducted by graduate students around the world. Developed by the University of Queensland (UQ), the competition allows students to share their work with a broad audience. 3MT promotes students’ academic and professional communication skills. Presenting a 3MT increases students' capacity to explain their scholarship while engaging (and entertaining) a general audience. All of this with personal presence and one PowerPoint® slide. Learn more about 3MT.

UAF Graduate School is also pleased to offer fellowships and scholarships to help you complete your graduate degree. These awards are made on a competitive basis based on review of an applicants' Report of Advisory Committee (RAC) and their degree completion timeline. Students may apply for both the fellowship and scholarship award in any one semester but can receive only one award. More information on funding opportunities for Interdisciplinary Studies Ph.D. students can be found on the Graduate School website.

Meet Yoko Kugo

Interdisciplinary Studies Ph.D. Student

Yoko Kugo is a student in the Arctic and Northern Studies program working on her Ph.D. in interdisciplinary studies. Her work focuses on the importance of Indigenous place names in understanding and supporting the relationships between people and their environment.  Kugo is truly a University of Alaska student, having come to UAF after completing her B.A. at UAS and an MA at UAA. During her M.A. studies, she had begun working with Yup’ik communities around Iliamna Lake to study their traditional and contemporary lifestyles. During that work, Elders in these communities shared their concern that their Yup’ik place names were in danger of being lost...
