NASA awarded nearly $3.5 million to a five-year project led by the International Arctic Research Center’s Elena Sparrow. Through the project, teachers, students and other community members will learn about the local effects of a shifting climate. Then they’ll record their own observations under protocols set by the Global Learning and Observation to Benefit the Environment program and compare those with NASA satellite data.


A $1 million donation from BP has doubled the amount raised so far to complete the fourth floor of the new engineering building at UAF. BP announced the donation at the 2016 Chancellor’s Gala.


Jay ’88 and Carrie Weaver made a $10,000 donation to the UAF Annual Fund, used to address the areas of greatest need. Their steadfast support has a substantial impact on UAF students and programs. In addition, they gave $5,000 to the UAF Alumni Association Chapter Support for Men's Nanook Hockey Fund.


Milton J. Bennett and the Stanton D. and Ernestine J. Bennett Charitable Trust gave $10,000 to the Stanton D. Bennett Scholarship for Electrical Engineering. This scholarship provides support to outstanding junior or senior electrical engineering students at UAF.


John McIntyre and the John and Patricia McIntyre Revocable Trust gave $25,252.53 to the Richard and Irene McIntyre Endowment for Research in Alaska History. This fund will assist with the digitalization of art and records housed in the Rasmuson Library to preserve them and increase their accessibility.


Dolly Dieter gave $50,000 to UAF in an outstanding show of support of Arctic research and development. Half will go to the Dieter Family Marine Science Research Scholarship and half will go to the Dieter Family Tsunami Bowl Endowment.


Susan Henrichs gave $10,000 to support UAF student scholarships in honor of the 2015 deans, directors and other administrators at UAF. Susan is among many UAF faculty and staff who demonstrate their commitment to programs and students through their generosity.


Helga ’64 and Bill Watterson supported UAF students through a $15,000 gift to the Bill and Helga Watterson Scholarship for engineering students interested in pursuing careers in construction. This is the couple’s second $15,000 gift this year.


John Zarling, professor emeritus of engineering, recently donated $30,000, divided evenly, to the Zarling Volleyball and Cross Country Skiing Scholarship, the Zarling Family Hockey Endowed Scholarship, the Zarling Engineering Endowed Scholarship, the Zarling Airframe and Powerplant Program Scholarship, the Hetherington Family Endowment, and the UAF Alumni Association Hockey Chapter Support for Men’s Nanook Hockey.


BP donated a combined $16,500 to the School of Management’s Arctic Innovation Competition, the School of Management’s Business Leader of the Year ceremony, the UAF student section of the American Association of Drilling Engineers in the petroleum engineering program, and the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics in February.


Alyeska Pipeline Service Co. made gifts to the Troth Yeddha' Legacy Initiative ($30,000) and the Rural Alaska Honors Institute ($15,000), and it became a blue level sponsor of the 2016 Chancellor’s Gala.


The International Arctic Science Committee will award the 2016 IASC Medal to John Walsh during the Arctic Science Summit Week 2016 on March 14 at 1:30 p.m. in the Wood Center ballroom. The award ceremony will include a short introduction by the IASC president and a 30-minute lecture by Walsh.


The University of Alaska Anchorage and UAF have joined forces with Washington State University to make it easier for Alaska students to earn chemical engineering degrees. The three universities, along with industry and community partners, will celebrate the collaboration at a ceremony on Friday, Feb. 26, at 3:30 p.m., in the second floor atrium of the UAA Engineering and Industry Building in Anchorage.
