BioPREP Students Shine at Regional Science Fair

Congratulations to Tiadola Silva and Forrest Braley, two BioPREP students from Angoon High School, whose research project received TWO awards at the Southeast Alaska Regional Science Fair in Juneau. They received the USAF Certificate of Achievement for Outstanding Science or Engineering Fair Project and The Society for In Vitro Biology Certificate of Outstanding Achievement for Ability and Creativity in In Vitro Biology.

Their project, DNA Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism (RFLP) Electrophoresis Simulation: Wolf Pack...What two wolves are the best to breed with each other?, was completed under the instruction and guidance of TIPS teacher Jim Parkin. 


Aaron Kallas is Honored with Biotechnology Teaching Award

The National Association of Biology Teachers (NABT) honored TIPS Coordinator Aaron Kallas with the 2013 Ron Mardigian Biotechnology Teaching Award.  Aaron is the first Alaskan teacher this receive this prestigious award.  Read more about it here (PDF).


BioPREP students win the 2013 Stockholm Junior Water Prize for the state of Alaska

Congratulations to Chelsea Parrocha and Taylor Seitz, high school students from an Alaska BioPREP supported class at Polaris K-12 in Anchorage, AK.  Their project, Potential Lateral Flow Test Design for the Detection of Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning, won the 2013 Stockholm Junior Water Prize for the state of Alaska.  They competed in the national competition June 14 and 15 in Portland, Oregon.  See Press Release.
