The
University of Alaska Fairbanks has developed a comprehensive
animal care program addressing the use of all live vertebrates
irrespective of purpose or funding source.
At
the core of this program is the Institutional Animal Care and
Use Committee with support provided through the Office of
Research Integrity, Animal Facility Personnel, UAF Veterinary
Services, Facilities Services, and the Department
Environmental Health and Safety & Risk Management.
The
University's goal is to foster a supportive environment for
high quality research, education, and service while ensuring
that all use of live vertebrates is adequately justified and
conducted by knowledgeable people using the most appropriate
methodology. Adherence to basic ethical principles is not only
morally right, it is the only means to ensure quality results!
In
addition to their oversight of all uses of vertebrate animals
at UAF, the IACUC plays an integral role in ensuring the health
and safety of faculty, staff, students and visitors who access
the UAF animal facilities. The IACUC, in conjunction with UAF
Veterinary Services, EHS&RM and the Office
of Research Integrity, is charged with overseeing and
administering UAF's Occupational Health & Safety Program
for the UAF Animal Facilities. Education and awareness are
at the core of any successful occupational health and safety
program and are the focus of our efforts at UAF.
