Ensuring the Responsible Use of Animals in Research and Teaching

All individuals working with live vertebrates must complete a formal educational program prior to starting their work and will be expected to peridocially complete a continuing education program. This is a vital component of our Animal Care Program and is required under a variety of regulations and guidelines. To accomodate this requirement the University of Alaska Fairbanks offers "Principles of Humane Animal Care and Use", a web based training program offered through Blackboard (http://classes.uaf.edu/) to University faculty, staff, students. Non-UAF personnel including collaborators and volunteers are also required to complete the course, but provisions have been made to allow them to complete it outside of Blackboard.

Course Material

The Office of Research Integrity has made the "Principles of Humane Animal Care and Use " course content available online, outside of Blackboard, so it can be used as a resource by all personnel on IACUC Assurances regardless of their association with the university.  To access the course content use the buttons on the Navigation Bar on the left-hand side of your screen.

How to enroll

If you are a UAF student, staff or faculty member and would like to be enrolled in the Blackboard course contact the Office of Research Integrity (x7800 or fyori@uaf.edu); you will need to provide your Name and UA username (usually your first initial, middle initial, and last name), as well as the name of the class or project you will be working on and the supervising staff or faculty member. Note: If you have changed your name since first enrolling or coming to work for the university, please provide both your previous and current last names.

If you are not a UAF student, staff, or faculty member and need to complete this training contact the Office of Research Integrity via phone 474-4078 (local) or 1-866-876-7800 (toll-free) or by email at fyori@uaf.edu.

Inappropriate Use of the UAF IACUC Web Based Training

UAF requires completion of the web based IACUC training course as a condition to access animal facilities and to work with live vertebrates in the field or laboratory. The content of each module should be reviewed prior to attempting the associated quiz. It is permissible to view the quizzes and use them as a learning tool while you review module content. After reviewing the content you may retake quizzes until you achieve a passing score. However, it is inappropriate to repeatedly retake quizzes without reviewing the module content first.

The purposeful subversion of the intent of the course, providing quiz answers to colleagues and/or “gaming” the software is unethical and qualifies as research/academic misconduct.

The UAF Animal Care Program relies on performance based standards to assess procedures and techniques as well as competence of personnel. Although important, successful completion of the web-based course may not be sufficient to maintain access to animal facilities and permission to use animals in research or teaching. These privileges may be revoked if you cannot demonstrate basic knowledge or understanding of the material covered in the IACUC training modules.

Thank you for helping to maintain the integrity research and teaching at UAF.
