Training Programs
The Office of Research Integrity offers training on a variety of compliance topics/issues. These training programs are available online, in formal training courses or workshops, via informal workshops, or as customized training for a specific audience. Basic courses related to the Humane Care and Use of Animals, Protection of Human Subjects, and the Responsible Conduct of Research are available online.
Types of Training
- New Investigator Training: Coming soon...
- Principles of Humane Animal Care & Use: This course is required for all individuals working with live vertebrates. It provides a review of the regulatory requirements, university procedures, and ethical principles governing the use of animals in research, teaching, and testing. Course content is available at http://www.uaf.edu/iacuc/training/. UAF personnel must successfully complete the course quizzes in Blackboard (http://classes.uaf.edu/). Non-UAF personnel will be provided word versions of the quizzes. Contact the Office of Research Integrity for more information or to enroll.
- Human Subjects: Training in human subject protections is required for all UAF principal investigators and graduate students conducting human subject research. Other personnel must complete the training program if they are conducting non-exempt human subject research or will have access to identifiable human subject data. UAF uses the Collaborative IRB Training Initiative (CITI) run by the University of Miami. For more information or to enroll visit: http://www.uaf.edu/irb/training.htm. Note: Be sure to list UAF as your institution so that the Office of Research Integrity will receive a copy of your training certificates.
- Responsible Conduct in Research: Provides a basic overview of the concepts of Responsible Conduct in Research. The course content is available via the Research Ethics link in the navigation bar on the left-hand side of the page. Quizzes are available in Blackboard for those needing to document a basic understanding of RCR topics; UAF personnel should contact the Office of Research Integrity to enroll.
- Animal Facility Orientation: This in-person session is required for all personnel working in UAF-owned animal facilities in Fairbanks. This includes the Irving I animal facility, approved satellite facilities, Biological Research & Diagnostics Building, SFOS Fisheries Facility in the Arctic Health Research Building, Biological Reserve, Agriculture & Forestry Experiment Station (Reindeer Research Program), and the Large Animal Research Station. Orientation sessions are held in 210 WRRB from 12:00-1:00 P.M. on the first and third Tuesday of each month. Registration is required - email fycomp@uaf.edu to let us know what date you would like to attend. Sessions will be cancelled if no one has registered by 5:00 P.M. on the preceding Monday.
- IRB Orientation: This in-person session is intended as an introduction to the UAF Instititutional Review Board's policies, procedures, review types, and forms. Although not required, this orientation is strongly reccommended for new graduate students, post doctoral researchers, and faculty planning to conduct research involving human subjects. Orientation sessions are held in 210 WRRB from 12:00-1:00 P.M. on the second Tuesday of each month. Registration is required - email fycomp@uaf.edu to let us know what date you would like to attend. Sessions will be cancelled if no one has registered by 5:00 P.M. on the preceding Monday.
- IBC Orientation: This in-person session is intended as an introduction to the UAF Institutional Biosafety Committee's policies, procedures, review types, and forms. Although not required, this orientation is strongly reccommended for new graduate students, post doctoral researchers, and faculty planning to conduct research involving recombinant DNA, infectious agents, or genetically modified organisms Orientation sessions are held in 210 WRRB from 12:00-1:00 P.M. on the fourth Tuesday of each month. Registration is required - email fycomp@uaf.edu to let us know what date you would like to attend. Sessions will be cancelled if no one has registered by 5:00 P.M. on the preceding Monday.
- Biological Safety Cabinet Training: This course is required for all individuals who will be working with a Biological Safety Cabinet (BSC). Training must be completed before an individual can be approved to work on any project requiring use of a BSC. This course is available through Blackboard; contact the Office of Research Integrity for more information or to enroll.
- Special Topic Workshops: Periodically the Office of Research Integrity offers workshop on specific regulatory or responsible conduct in research topics. These workshops will be advertised on the ORI home page, through emails, and fliers posted around campus. Workshops are open to all UAF faculty, staff, and students, but are typically designed and intended for researchers rather than support staff.
