Parent Information
Parents are an important connection for students starting out on a new academic endeavor, particularly during the first year. The encouragement and support provided by parents is vital for each student's success.
We also recognize that students are becoming adults with the ability and need to make decisions and choices on their own. We hope that you will recognize this transition and provide the understanding of this new phase in your student's life.
With that in mind, it is important to also be aware of the limitations the university has in providing parents with information about their student. The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (or FERPA) has placed limitations on what an institution can share about each student. While FERPA prohibits us from sharing information on grades or academic status with parents, it does not stop us from being on the same team with parents in wanting successful degree completion for our UAF students.
A FERPA Release Form can be completed which will allow us to discuss some of your student's information with a designated individual(s).
If you have specific questions, feel free to call the Vice Provost's office at (907) 474-2764 or send an e-mail to uaf.generalstudies@alaska.edu.
