Dr. Curt A. L. Szuberla

Associate Professor of Physics, Emeritus

WHEREAS Dr. Curt A. L. Szuberla served the University of Alaska Fairbanks with distinction in teaching, research and public service from 2005 to 2020; and

WHEREAS Dr. Szuberla taught a variety of undergraduate and graduate physics classes; and, having himself earned a doctorate in physics from the University, he has in his turn mentored numerous master’s and doctoral students; and

WHEREAS Dr. Szuberla has been active in pioneering research on measurements of infrasound, which grew from a local effort to a global endeavor with stations as far away as Antarctica, making the University one of the most acclaimed centers for infrasound research in the world; and he has authored or co-authored more than thirty publications and made more than one hundred presentations around the world; and

WHEREAS Dr. Szuberla took an active role in department service, most notably by serving as chair for three years; and, in helping found and lead the Wilson Alaska Technical Center at the Geophysical Institute, he greatly enhanced the reputation of the University when the center became a University Affiliated Research Center for Geophysical Detection of Nuclear Proliferation with the U.S. Department of Defense;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the University of Alaska Fairbanks expresses its deep appreciation to Dr. Curt A. L. Szuberla for his extensive contributions to the State of Alaska and to the University; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the University of Alaska Fairbanks, in further recognition of the invaluable services rendered by Dr. Szuberla and as evidence of the University’s desire that his identification with the University be maintained, hereby salutes the appointment of Dr. Curt A. L. Szuberla as Associate Professor of Physics, Emeritus; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this resolution be appropriately engrossed and signed by the Chancellor of the University of Alaska Fairbanks as further evidence of the esteem and respect in which he holds Dr. Curt A. L. Szuberla, and conveyed to Dr. Szuberla on this first day of May, 2021.
