Dr. Lawrence Kaplan

Professor of Linguistics, Emeritus

WHEREAS Dr. Lawrence Kaplan has served the University of Alaska Fairbanks with distinction in teaching, research and public service from 1974 to 2018; and

WHEREAS Dr. Kaplan taught an astounding array of twenty-six different classes during his career; and

WHEREAS Dr. Kaplan has been a tireless supporter of Alaska Native language preservation and revitalization, and his research has yielded numerous influential publications, including several Iñupiaq dictionaries, other books and monographs, and dozens of articles; and

WHEREAS Dr. Kaplan has made many contributions to public service, including consulting with many Alaska school districts on Iñupiaq language and language teaching, and he was recognized with the Denali Award by the Alaska Federation of Natives; and

WHEREAS Dr. Kaplan ably served as the Director of the Alaska Native Language Center and Head of the Linguistics program for nearly two decades and was deeply appreciated for his selfless assistance, fairness and kindness; and

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the University of Alaska Fairbanks expresses its deep appreciation to Dr. Lawrence Kaplan for his extensive contributions to the State of Alaska and to the University; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the University of Alaska Fairbanks, in further recognition of the invaluable services rendered by Dr. Kaplan and as evidence of the University’s desire that his identification with the University be maintained, hereby salutes the appointment of Dr. Lawrence Kaplan as Professor of Linguistics, Emeritus; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this resolution be appropriately engrossed and signed by the Chancellor of the University of Alaska Fairbanks as further evidence of the esteem and respect in which he holds Dr. Lawrence Kaplan, and conveyed to Dr. Kaplan on this 4th day of May, 2018.
