Mr. Robert Gieck

Research Professional, Emeritus

WHEREAS Mr. Robert Gieck served the University of Alaska Fairbanks with distinction in teaching, research and public service from 1985 to 2017; and

WHEREAS Mr. Gieck organized countless field expeditions, ensuring the safe and accurate collection of data in numerous unforgiving locations throughout Alaska, adapting technologies and developing innovative techniques; and

WHEREAS Mr. Gieck mentored dozens of students, faculty and staff, and is widely admired for his enthusiasm, diligence and determination in the face of adversity; and WHEREAS Mr. Gieck contributed to many publications by evaluating, compiling, reporting and archiving the field data, as well as being a co-author of a number of articles and reports; and

WHEREAS Mr. Gieck was primarily responsible for the annual snowmelt survey, which so far extends for 30 years and is an important resource for the Arctic hydrology community; and

WHEREAS Mr. Gieck was a leader of Water and Environmental Research Center community outreach;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the University of Alaska Fairbanks expresses its deep appreciation to Mr. Robert Gieck for his extensive contributions to the State of Alaska and to the University; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the University of Alaska Fairbanks, in further recognition of the invaluable services rendered by Mr. Gieck and as evidence of the University’s desire that his identification with the University be maintained, hereby salutes the appointment Mr. Robert Gieck as Research Professional, Emeritus; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this resolution be appropriately engrossed and signed by the Chancellor of the University of Alaska Fairbanks as further evidence of the esteem and respect in which he holds Mr. Robert Gieck, and conveyed to Mr. Gieck on this 4th day of May, 2018.
