About Upward Bound
Upward Bound is a federally funded program aimed to improve the graduation rates of high school students and increase the number of graduates who continue with post-secondary education. Upward Bound program primarily serves economically challenged families with students who are the first-generation to attend college.
The History of Upward Bound
Upward Bound is the oldest of a series of programs known as TRIO Programs, was created as part of President Lyndon B. Johnson’s “War on Poverty”. Specific legislation for the program was initially authorized under the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964 and later moved to be included under Title IV of the Higher Education Act of 1965. This legislation authorized the TRIO programs to provide educational opportunity for all Americans regardless of race, ethnic background or economic circumstance. Alaska was awarded the first Upward Bound project over 50 years ago!
