This is an addendum to the 2002-2003 UAF General Catalog.

  • A new master's degree in software engineering was approved by the Board of Regents at its June 2002 meeting. This master's degree is effective for the 2002-03 academic year. This document includes the specifics of that new degree.

Degree: M.S.E.

Minimum Requirements for Degree: 30 credits;

Graduate Program

Software Engineering -- M.S.E. Degree

  1. Complete the UAF admission process including the following:
    1. Submit GRE general scores.
    2. Complete at least a bachelor's degree at an accredited institution with a GPA of at least 3.0 and have at least two years of relevant professional experience. Admission into this degree program does not require a B.S. in computer science, but rather is for people who "evolve" into computer science from other fields.
    3. Pass a comprehensive exam written by the software engineering faculty covering material in the core software engineering courses (CS 602 and 671) and the fundamentals of the computer science core (CS 670).
  2. Complete the general university requirements.
  3. Complete the master's degree requirements.
  4. Complete the following:
    CS 602 -- Project Management and Professional Practice (3 credits)
    CS 670 -- Computer Science for Software Engineers (3 credits)
    CS 671 -- Advanced Software Engineering (3 credits)
    CS 690 -- Graduate Seminar and Project (3 credits)
    CS 691 -- Graduate Seminar and Project (3 credits)
    ESM 608 -- Legal Principles for Engineering Management (3)
    or BA 604 -- The Legal Environment of Business (3) (3 credits)
    Approved electives (12 credits)
  5. Minimum credits required (30 credits)
