Degree: B.A.S.

Minimum Requirements for Degree: 120 credits

The arts and sciences degree program provides comprehensive instruction in the subject areas encompassed in Alaska content and performance standards for elementary education. These subject areas are: English/language arts, mathematics, science, geography, government and citizenship, history, skills for a healthy life, arts, world languages and technology. The B.A.S. degree provides a foundation in these areas for students planning to become elementary school teachers. Required courses and electives meet the broad-based learning needs of future elementary school teachers.

The B.A.S. degree provides appropriate instruction in mathematics and science so that students will complete the degree program with the necessary background and confidence to teach these subjects as well as themselves become teachers. The B.A.S. degree also provides the necessary breadth and educational opportunities in the social sciences and humanities/fine arts to provide future elementary teachers with the necessary understanding of key principles and content knowledge to later teach these subjects competently.

Students in the B.A.S. degree program who have not declared a minor are advised by the Academic Advising Center. Those who have declared a minor will be assigned an advisor in the department which offers that minor. B.A.S. majors may choose any approved minor. However, those preparing to teach in elementary (K-6) schools are encouraged to choose the education minor.

Students who satisfactorily complete the B.A.S. degree with an education minor will be particularly well-positioned, not only to apply for admission into the fifth-year licensure program at UAF, but also to directly enter into the 9-month series of graduate-level courses and a teaching internship in a classroom with a mentor teacher.
