Grants.gov - http://www.grants.gov/

Grants.gov allows organizations to electronically find and apply for competitive grant opportunities from all Federal grant-making agencies. When fully implemented, Grants.gov is intended to be THE single access point for grant programs offered by the 26 Federal grant-making agencies. The individual agencies are developing plans to transition to Grants.gov. Check specific solicitations or program announcements for submission requirements. There are 2 portions to Grants.gov:

  • Find Grant Opportunities - The 'Find Grant Opportunities' portion of Grants.gov allows users to search for funding opportunities and their corresponding application packages (if available).
  • Apply for Grants - The 'Apply for Grants' function allows users to directly download application packages to their individual computers. Once downloaded, the user can work on the application locally on his/her own machine.

Getting Started

  • UAF has already registered on Grants.gov. The Office of Sponsored Programs has an account with Grants.Gov.
  • PIs and department administrators do not need to create an account or login/password to search funding opportunities or download PureEdge or application packages.
  • The Office of Sponsored Programs will submit all Grants.gov applications.
  • If you are using a Mac, you will need the free Citrix client to prepare applications for Grants.gov.
  • The application (in PureEdge) will save as one document (.xfd extension) with attachments. You need to forward this file (e-mail, disk, etc.) to the OSP for final submission to Grants.gov.
  • The UAF paper proposal routing process has not changed; an original, fully-signed proposal is still required before proposal submission on Grants.gov.

Preparing an application for submission to Grants.gov
  1. Download the PureEdge viewer software and install it on your computer.
  2. Use Grants.gov's search features to find a funding opportunity, download the application package (forms and instructions).
  3. Read the program solicitation carefully. Pay particular attention to the deadline time – the deadline time is often listed as Eastern Standard/Daylight time.
  4. Open the application package with PureEdge. Complete all mandatory forms and upload required attachments.
  5. Save the file often; click the "Check for Errors" button.
  6. Send your original, fully-signed paper proposal to the OSP and e-mail the completed (.xfd) PureEdge file to OSP staff. If the package is too large to attach to an email message, please deliver it on a disk.
