Asphalt odor expected from Wood Center roof work

June 8, 2017

UAF News

Asphalt odor from the new Wood Center roof will be noticeable on campus next week.

The roof replacement project's asphalt kettle is expected to be fired first on Wednesday, June 14.

Low-smell asphalt and kettles with fume-control attachments are being used. Also, contractors are working with Facilities Services to adjust ventilation systems to minimize fumes in buildings. While the equipment and actions will reduce the odor, some smell will be perceptible in and around Wood Center.

The material safety data sheet for the asphalt is available at http://www.continentalmaterials.com/images/MSDS/msds_asphalt_2016.pdf.

Asphalt smell is an inconvenient byproduct of built-up roofs and road work. Facilities Services staff members appreciate everyone's tolerance each construction season.
