The UAF Alaska Satellite Facility will celebrate the opening of its newest NASA-sponsored antenna, AS3, on Thursday, June 26, at 3 p.m. at the UAF North Campus Access Road near the West Ridge Ski Hut.
The new antenna is 11 meters in diameter and was installed at the University of Alaska Fairbanks to support the NASA Ground Network. Satellite observations monitored by AS3 will contribute to detailed mapping, observation of sea ice and severe weather patterns, and global climate change research.
Nettie La Belle-Hamer, ASF director, will host the event, and NASA dignitaries will be on hand. UAF is the only university in the United States involved with the NASA Ground Network.
“This is evidence of the long-term relationship NASA has with UAF,” said La Belle-Hamer.
The Alaska Satellite Facility is part of UAF's Geophysical Institute.
