The UAF Department of Athletics has announced the creation of the Sru’oł Campaign, a fundraiser to seek financial support for the department's most critical areas of need, including recruiting, retaining student-athletes, and providing scholarships for tuition, books, housing and dining services.

Sru’oł, pronounced "shrew-ōlth," is the Lower Tanana Dene Athabascan word for “sport” or “game,” and is local to the Troth Yeddha’ Campus area.

With the negative impact of COVID-19, the Alaska Nanooks were unable to raise additional income through camps and clinics this past summer, along with other marketing and fundraising initiatives.

Keith Champagne, vice chancellor for student affairs and athletics, wrote about the initiative in an appeal to supporters.

"While things may look different going forward (games, events, facility requirements, community service projects, etc.), our purpose remains the same — providing our student-athletes with educational opportunities and life-changing experiences," he wrote. "The Alaska Nanooks are committed to continuing to give back to the Fairbanks community, and we are hopeful Nanook Nation will continue to invest in us."

Donations to the Sru'oł campaign can be made online.
