The UAF Police Department advises community members to keep credit and debit cards on their person. There has been an increase in the number of local incidents where cards have been stolen. Be aware and don't leave any belongings unattended. If your cards are stolen, report it to your financial institution and the police immediately. The UAF Police Department is using Nixle to provide campus safety information in real-time; sign up to have updates sent directly to your cell phone.

The UAF Geophysical Institute and the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology have teamed up to study the lightning produced during volcanic eruptions. The team is currently studying the lightening produced by the Eyjafjallajokull eruption in Iceland.

The UA Museum of the North and the Antique Auto Museum are offering a joint pass this summer, for admission to both museums. Passes are $15 and can be purchased at either museum. For more information call 474-7505.

The UAF Art Department is hosting the 2010 Visual Arts Academy June 7 – 18 for students entering grades 6 – 12. The program offers courses in animation, ceramics, computer art, costume and fashion design, digital photography, drawing and design, metalsmithing, painting, printmaking, and sculpture and 3-D design. Deadlines are May 14 for scholarship applications; May 28 for registration. For more information call 474-7530.

The Office of Information Technology is conducting a survey about what you would like to have at Tech Fest 2010, scheduled for Oct. 6 – 8. The survey deadline is May 17. For more information about Tech Fest e-mail syitevent@email.alaska.edu.

The UA Museum of the North is seeking volunteers for the annual TOTE Family Fun Fest Sunday, June 13, from noon – 4 p.m. For more information or to volunteer contact Peggy Hetman at 474-5360 or museum.education@uaf.edu.

David Klein, emeritus professor from Institute of Arctic Biology and Alaska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit, presented a special school program, public lecture, educator training and a family program focusing on arctic and subarctic ecology at the Sci-Port Science Center in Louisiana May 7 – 8.

A paper by Shiva Hullavarad and Nilima Hullavarad, both with the Office of Electronic Miniaturization, titled "Catalyst Free Direct Vapor Phase Growth of Hexagonal ZnO Nanowires on c-Al2O3," was accepted for publication in the Journal of Electronic Materials. Their research was carried out in collaboration with the U.S. Army Research Laboratory and the University of Maryland.

The UAF shuttle bus system begins its summer route schedule May 17. The shuttle will be available on call to all on-campus bus stops and designated off-campus stops. Call 474-7433 to request a pickup.

The UAF Student Health and Counseling Center will provide full medical and counseling services to students during the summer. Services will be available Monday – Thursday, May 17 – Aug. 13, 8 a.m. – 1 p.m. Students taking six credits or more will pay $66 for access to all medical, counseling and administrative services. A summer bridge fee, also $66, is available for students taking less than six credits or not taking classes, providing the same medical and counseling access. Students may participate who are enrolled for six or more credits in the fall semester and who were eligible for health center services during spring semester. UAF is participating in the Golden Days Parade Saturday, July 24. The planning committee is seeking people to participate and collecting items to hand out during the parade. For more information contact Nancy Tarnai at 474-5042 or ntarnai@alaska.edu.

Chancellor Rogers hosted a forum about tuition last week. An archive and copies of the relevant documents are available on the chancellor's website.

The 2010 Longevity Awards list of faculty and staff members with 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35 or 40 years of uninterrupted service as of Dec. 31, 2009 is available online.




 

Commencement rehearsal takes place Saturday, May 15, at 10:30 a.m. at the Carlson Center. Chancellor Rogers invites graduates and their guests to the Graduate Picnic directly after rehearsal from 12:30 – 2 p.m. at Wood Center.

Commencement 2010 takes place Sunday, May 16, at the Carlson Center. The procession line-up for graduates begins at 12:20 p.m. and for faculty, administration, honorary degree recipients and the stage party at 12:45 p.m. The Carlson Center opens for guests at noon. The academic procession begins at 1:20 p.m. and the graduation ceremony begins at 1:30 p.m.

The UAF Alumni Association is hosting a commencement reception immediately following the ceremony in the Carlson Center's Arthur Buswell Pioneer Room.

The Georgeson Botanical Garden Spring Plant Sale will be Saturday, May 15, from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m., with everything 50 percent off from 4 – 5 p.m. For more information contact Kathleen Buchholz at 474-5651.

The UA Museum of the North's summer exhibit "Then & Now: The Changing Arctic Landscape" opens May 15. The museum is open 9 a.m. – 9 p.m. daily May 15 – Sept. 15.

Rural Student Services is hosting a celebration of honorary Ph.D. recipient Paul John and 40 years of student support and success Saturday, May 15, from 4 – 6 p.m. in the RSS Gathering Room in the Brooks Building. RSS will provide hamburgers and hot dogs and asks attendees to bring a salad, side dish or dessert to share. For those who can't attend, the presentation will be presented via audio conference at 1-800-893-8850, PIN 2400163.

UAF is hosting the Really Free Market Saturday, May 22, from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. at the Patty Center parking lot. Drop off items at the Patty Center parking lot between 8 – 10 a.m. Volunteers are needed to help with set-up, working the market and clean up. A seminar on energy-efficient log home construction will be held Saturday – Sunday, May 22 – 23, at the Palmer Center for Sustainable Living. This workshop, sponsored by the School of Natural Resources and Agricultural Sciences, Cooperative Extension Service and the State of Alaska Building Science Network, will teach how to build scribe-fit, hand-crafted, natural log homes. Fast Food Nation and Ruminations: An Evening with Eric Schlosser, presented by Summer Sessions and Alaska EPSCoR, with support by Cooperative Extension Service, takes place Thursday, May 27, at 5:30 p.m. in Davis Concert Hall. Admission is free.

UAF Summer Sessions hosts free movie nights this summer with Reel History – Documenting Alaska on Tuesdays June 1 – Aug. 10, with Paddle to Seattle: Journey Through the Inside Passage June 1 and Gates of the Arctic: Alaska's Brooks Range June 8; and Reeling Green on Thursdays June 3 – Aug. 12, with An Inconvenient Truth June 3 and Food, Inc. June 10. All movies will be shown at 7 p.m. in Schaible Auditorium.

The Jasper String Quartet presents a concert Tuesday, June 1, at 8 p.m. in Davis Concert Hall. Tickets in advance are $12 for adults, $6 seniors, military and students, or $15 the day of the concert. For more information call Summer Sessions at 474-7021.

The Beluga Nights Concert Series, hosted by the Student Activities Office, presents the Brothers of Baladi Sunday, June 6, at 6 p.m. in Beluga Field, next to the Student Recreation Center. Admission is free. Pets must be on a leash and no alcohol is allowed.

Grants and Awards

Milo Adkison and Larissa Dehn, both with the School of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences, are lead professors for a project that received a $435,000 grant from the Pollock Conservation Cooperative Research Center to study decline and variability in Western Alaska king salmon runs. Megan McPhee, SFOS, received $180,000 in matching funds from the Alaska Sustainable Salmon Fund to augment the study.

June 1: Applications for the UA Museum of the North 2010 Artisan Expo and Sale are due. The application deadline has been extended. Artists working in all media and living in Alaska or the circumpolar North are welcome to apply.

June 4
: Abstract submissions for the 26th Lowell Wakefield Fisheries Symposium, Ecosystems 2010: Global Progress on Ecosystems-based Fisheries Management, are due.
