Alan Boraas, UAA, is the 2009 recipient of the Edith R. Bullock Prize for Excellence. Boraas is a professor of anthropology at Kenai Peninsula College. The $20,000 award was made possible this year by a gift from First National Bank Alaska.

Pamela Couzin from the Alaska Department of Retirement and Benefits will be on campus Monday – Friday, Nov. 16 – 20. Couzin will offer group retirement sessions, individual retirement counseling appointments and PERS/TERS retirement application workshops. Individual sessions are by appointment only. The PERS evening session takes place Tuesday, Nov. 17, and the TERS evening session takes place Thursday, Nov. 19, both at 6 p.m. in the Rasmuson Library Media Classroom, room 340. The UAF Center for Health and Counseling is providing updates on H1N1 influenza and student services via Twitter. H1N1 influenza information is also available at UAF on Alert.
A project headed by David Atkinson, IARC, Social Vulnerability to Climate Change in Alaskan Coastal Communities, funded by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, is available as a video online. The project, with assistance from Bill Schneider, Rasmuson Library, and Craig Gerlach, CLA, looks at understanding the effects of warming temperatures on Alaska's coastal communites by asking residents about day-to-day weather issues that cause difficulties for them.
The Arctic Innovation Competition, a statewide contest organized by the School of Managment, seeks new, creative and useful ideas to solve real-world problems. The contest is open to the public. Eric Heyne has been named interim dean of the College of Liberal Arts.
Wayne Marr, SOM, gave an interview on KRLD NewsRadio of Dallas-Fort Worth on Sept. 5 about things taught in finance or economics class that the average investor should know. Marr's Twitter site is also one of the top three followed in the Alaska Twitter Directory.
UA Press recently published The Little Seal, by Ram Papish, a children's book about the life of a northern fur seal in the Bering Sea.
Alaska Sea Grant released Clean Boating for Alaskans, a new 28-page booklet. The booklet includes tips on how to keep the marine evironment pristine, save fuel, mitigate marine debris, respect wildlife and access the latest boat technology. Free copies of the booklet are available online.
The UA College Savings Plan is celebrating College Savings Month by making a $50 contribution to any new account opened and funded in September. For more information call 474-5671.
University employees can now add Bear Bucks to a PolarExpress card, for themselves or one other recipient, via payroll deduction. Amounts deducted will be added to cards by noon each payday. Bear Bucks deductions are non-refundable.
The Borealis Bistro, operated by TVC's Culinary Arts Program, opens for the fall semester Tuesday, Sept. 22. The bistro is open Tuesday – Friday, 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. Weekly menus are available online.

The Northern Leadership Center presents the Susan Herman Distinguished Speaker Series lecture, "Leading Multicultural Teams," by Joseph Garcia, Western Washington University, Tuesday, Sept. 22, at 7 p.m. in Schaible Auditorium.
UAF TechFest '09, sponsored by OIT, takes place Wednesday – Friday, Sept. 23 – 25. Most events will be held in Wood Center. Sessions are free but registration is required. The Financial Aid Office presents Finan¢ial $ense, a series of workshops held each Thursday at 1 p.m. in 413 Gruening. The workshops are open to all faculty, staff, alumni and students. The 2009 UAF Alumni Reunion takes place Thursday, Sept. 24 – Saturday, Sept. 26. Wanda Chin, UA Museum of the North, Rudy Krejci, professor of philosophy and humanities, emeritus, and James Kari, professor of linguistics, emeritus, are recipients of the 2009 Governor's Awards for the Arts. Chin won the Arts Advocacy Award and Krejci and Kari won the Governor's Awards for the Humanities.
Oscar Kawagley, associate professor of education, emeritus, was awarded the 2009 Lifetime Achievement Award by the National Indian Education Association.

Nanook hockey's annual Blue and Gold game takes place Saturday, Sept. 26, at 6 p.m. in the Patty Ice Arena.
