For Your Information

The Fairbanks Experiment Farm will soon harvest its second crop of apples from high-tunnel greenhouses. The project is testing the effect of unheated greenhouses on the survival rate and yield of apples, berries and other fruit trees in extreme cold conditions.

KUAC AlaskaOne TV will be upgrading its digital signal from Sept. 14 – 25. During this final phase of the digital television transition, AlaskaOne will be off the air for viewers who receive their signal with rabbit ears or a rooftop antenna in Fairbanks, Manley, Delta and Healy. Also, viewers in the Fairbanks and Juneau areas who receive AlaskaOne via DirectTV and DishNetwork will lose their signal. Cable subscribers and viewers in other locations will not be affected. Be sure to re-scan your digital tuner after Sept. 25 to receive the upgraded AlaskaOne signal.

Shiva Hullavarad and Nilima Hullavarad, OEM, were authors of the paper "Persistent Photoconductivity Studies in Nanostructured ZnO UV Sensors," which was accepted for publication in Nanoscale Research Letters.

Events

The Law School Consortium (PDF), hosted by Career Services, takes place Wednesday, Sept. 16, from 11:30 a.m. – 2: 30 p.m. in the Wood Center. For more information call 474-7596.

The Financial Aid Office presents Finan¢ial $ense, a series of workshops held each Thursday at 1 p.m. in 413 Gruening. The workshops are open to all faculty, staff, alumni and students. The first workshop, Budgeting Your Money, takes place Sept. 17 and Financial Aid 101 takes place Sept. 24. Workshops can also be scheduled for a group or to replace a canceled class. "Polar Bears and Sea Ice," a lecture by George Durner, U.S. Geological Survey, hosted by the UA Museum of the North, takes place Thursday, Sept. 17 at 7 p.m. Admission is free. For more information call 474-7505.

Tom Sexton, past Alaska Poet Laureate and author of For the Sake of the Light, will be the guest speaker at the Midnight Sun Visiting Writers Series Friday, Sept. 18, at 7 p.m. in Schaible Auditorium.

Outdoor Adventures offers trips and rental equipment to students, faculty, staff and alumni. Upcoming trips include the equinox full moon hike Friday, Sept. 18, Chena canoe float Saturday, Sept. 19, Wickersham dome dinner hike Saturday, Sept. 19, and women on the rocks Sunday, Sept. 20. Outdoor Adventures also offers a monthly slideshow series, The History of Alaskan Adventuring, with the next show Thursday, Sept. 17, and north campus hikes twice a month with the next hike Tuesday, Sept. 22. The Northern Leadership Center presents the Susan Herman Distinguished Speaker series lecture, "Leading Multicultural Teams," by Joseph Garcia, Western Washington University, Tuesday, Sept. 22, at 7 p.m. in Schaible Auditorium.

UAF TechFest '09, sponsored by OIT,  takes place Wednesday – Friday, Sept. 23 – 25. Most events will be held in Wood Center. Sessions are free but registration is required. For more information contact oitevent@alaska.edu.

The 2009 UAF Alumni Reunion takes place Thursday, Sept. 24 – Saturday, Sept. 26. The awards luncheon will be held Friday, Sept. 25 at 11:30 a.m. at the Princess Riverside Lodge and the Nanook Hall of Fame Brunch will be held Saturday, Sept. 26 at 10:30 a.m. in the Wood Center Carol Brown Ballroom. Engineering and Geoscience Career Week 2009 (PDF), sponsored by Career Services, is Sept. 28 – Oct. 2. Employers will be on campus to recruit students for internships and jobs. A job fair takes place Wednesday, Sept. 30, from 5:30 – 8:30 p.m. For more information call 474-7596.

The UA Geography Program and the World Affairs Council present free lectures, including "Restorative Justice," by Linda Biehl, co-founder and director of the Amy Biehl Foundation, Wednesday, Sept. 16, 7 p.m. in the Wood Center Carol Brown Ballroom and "Media Coverage of the Israel-Palestine Conflict, U.S. Foreign Policy Regarding the Middle East," by Alison Weir, founder of If Americans Knew, Thursday, Oct. 1, at 7 p.m. in Schaible Auditorium.

The 12th annual Farthest North Forest Sports Festival takes place Saturday, Oct. 3. The fun begins at 10 a.m. at the Fairbanks Experiment Farm field across from the Georgeson Botanical Garden, and at 1 p.m. moves to Ballaine Lake. Chena Fest, a fundraiser for FFA (formerly known as Future Farmers of America) natural resources education, takes place Saturday, Oct. 3, at 6:30 p.m. at Chena Hot Springs Resort. The fest includes an all-Alaskan grown dinner and entertainment. Tickets are $25. For more information call 474-6916.

Nanook women's cross country runner Theresia Schnurr won the Hawaii Pacific University Invitational Saturday, Sept. 5. The men's and women's teams finished fourth overall.

Nanook volleyball takes on Montana State Billings Thursday, Sept. 17, at 7 p.m. in the Patty Center gym.

The Alaska Nanook athletic event scores from last week are: Away games – volleyball vs. Chaminade, 3-1, vs. Hawaii-Pacific, 3-0, vs. Hawaii-Hilo, 0-3, and vs. BYU, 3-1.
