Jennifer Carroll has been appointed acting vice chancellor of Rural, Community and Native Education. Carroll will oversee CRCD from Aug. 1, 2008 – July 31, 2009 while Bernice Joseph takes a professional leave of absence to pursue a doctoral degree.
Chancellor Rogers announced free visitor parking in the Taku Lot off Farmer’s Loop and the Nenana Lot across from the Patty Center. The free parking began July 13 and will continue through the end of the summer.
The Cornerstone Newsletter publication schedule is changing to better meet the needs of the UAF community. The electronic newsletter will be published weekly on Mondays beginning this fall. Submissions remain due Wednesdays at noon.
A new partnership between UAF and the Fairbanks North Star Borough will allow the UAF PolarExpress card to serve as a bus pass on all borough bus routes. The program will begin on Sept. 1. For more information visit www.uaf.edu/news/.
Beware of e-mails, telephone calls or text messages requesting your personal information. Several e-mail scams this summer have posed as UAF departments asking for sensitive personal information. Remember that UAF will never ask for this information via e-mail. Disregard these e-mails. If you have concerns over any e-mail that seems to be from UAF, call OIT at 8300.
Office of Electronic Miniaturization researchers had a paper selected to appear in the Virtual Journal of Ultrafast Science. The paper Electrical and Optical Properties of V2O5 Micro-Nano Structures Grown by Direct Vapor Phase Deposition Method was previously published in the Journal of The Electrochemical Society.
UAF scientists participated in the 2008 Science Teacher Education Program where Alaska teachers received intensive training in earth sciences and lesson development ideas. All lessons developed during the STEP program will be posted online and made available to any teacher. For more information visit the Newsroom.
RAHI honored 47 students at its 2008 graduation ceremony July 9. RAHI alumnus Ed Alexander gave the keynote address. Alexander graduated from UAF and teaches at the high school in Fort Yukon.

Scientists from the GI are providing daily aurora shows and information at the Aurora Borealis Cabin in Pioneer Park from noon – 8 p.m. daily through Sept. 1. Aurora movies will be shown in an inflatable aurora dome Aug. 16 and Sept. 1 from 1 – 5 p.m., every 15 minutes.
The Borealis Brass will be the featured artists Aug. 17 on Brasscast.com, a weekly broadcast program of music by brass players from around the world.
