Leadership Opportunities at UAF--Get Involved!
Leadership is not magnetic personality, that can just as well be a glib tongue. It is not 'making friends and influencing people,' that is flattery. Leadership is lifting a person's vision to higher sights, the raising of a person's performance to a higher standard, the building of a personality beyond its normal limitations. --Peter F. Drucker
Leadership can have many definitions. Most would state that leaders are made, not born. UAF currently has several student leadership initiatives that have all worked somewhat independently. This year Leadership UAF, which is composed of faculty and staff working with the various leadership programs on campus and directed by Susan Herman, is coordinating their efforts.
A few years ago a group of faculty and staff began a leadership committee focused on helping students become better leaders. The committee sponsored a fall leadership conference to provide motivation, vision and skills development. This annual event has grown in scope over the years. The UAF Leadership Program is one of many successful and prominent leadership initiatives on campus. The program focuses on leadership development, reflection, community service and hands-on leadership opportunities through student organization experiences. For more information contact J.J. Boggs at leadership@uaf.edu or 1170 or visit www.uaf.edu/leadership/.
Another leadership opportunity is the minor in Leadership and Civic Engagement that offers students a concentration of courses to strengthen their abilities to lead and contribute effectively in both public and private spheres, in politics, in the work place and in other arenas. For more information contact Judith Kleinfeld at ffjsk@uaf.edu or Mary Ehrlander at ffmfe@uaf.edu.
The ROTC program at UAF is one of the oldest in the country, producing officers for the U.S. Army since 1927. Many of the officers have gone on to senior leadership positions including congressmen, state legislators, judges and corporate executives, all of whom drew on their Army leadership training to become successes in the civilian world. For more information, contact the Military Sciences Department at rotc@uaf.edu or 7501.
The Associated Students of the University of Alaska Fairbanks is the student government on campus. ASUAF's primary focus is addressing student issues and concerns. Student government is supported by fees, and ASUAF encourages student participation. For more information contact info@asuaf.org or 7355.
In addition to these leadership opportunities, there are many other strong leadership programs at UAF. Our hope is that students going through the various leadership programs will serve UAF while they are attending the university and will have a positive effect on Alaska when they graduate.
