Mining Applications and Technology

Students enrolled in one or more mining applications and technologies courses will be assessed $75 each semester to cover the cost of utilizing upgraded state-of-the-art equipment with instructional aids and supplies that meet current industry standards.

Introduction To Mining
Fundamentals of surface and underground mining, economic planning, proper exploration designs, environmental concerns and safety factors. (3 + 0) Offered As Demand Warrants


AMIT 109      1 Credit
Underground Mine Safety
Rights of miners, self rescue devices, introduction to the work environment, escapeways, roof and ground control, ventilation, health, cleanup, hazard recognition, first aid, mine gasses, electrical hazards. Course fulfills the Mine Safety Health Administration requirements for new underground miner training. Students are awarded MSHA certificate upon course completion. AMIT 110      3 Credits
Underground Mining I
Orientation to the mine environment, general mine inspection, scaling, staging, drilling, rock bolting, blasting, mucking and mine rescue. Explosives I
Theory and safe use of explosives with a focus on blasting agents used for rock excavation. (3 + 0) Offered As Demand Warrants

Mineral Exploration Techniques
Modern, scientific exploration and prospecting techniques utilized in Alaska since the 1970s. Exploration design, ore deposit models, exploration geochemistry and geophysics, drilling sampling and geostatistics. (3 + 0) Offered As Demand Warrants

Surface Mine Safety

Introduction to Mining Systems and Equipment
An overview to the field of mining beneficiation and comminution, systems and equipment used for the mining and mineral processing industry. Fundamentals of basic separation and mineral beneficiation, surface and underground mining, economic planning, environmental concerns, safety and terminology will be explored. Materials fee: $60. Provides an overview or introduction into the field of mineral beneficiation and comminution, systems and equipment used for the mineral processing industry. Laboratory Analysis

Water Quality and Flocculants

Fundamentals of Coal Mining
Origin and types of Alaska and other coal deposits, exploration and planning methods, extraction processes for underground and surface mines, mining safety, coal preparation and reclamation. Geomagnetic Surveying

AMIT 230      2 Credits
Field Methods
Topographic map reading using a compass and basic field procedures. Map and chart preparation. Drafting skills for prospecting maps, mine maps, permits and data presentation. Materials fee: $60. (2 + 0) Offered As Demand Warrants

Heap Leaching
Heap leaching covering cyanide safety, leach pad construction and placement, cyanide processing, thiourea, case histories, applications to Alaska and economics. Materials fee: $60. (1 + 0) Offered As Demand Warrants

Mining Coop Work Experience
