Mentor Awards

 

Applications will open August 1, 2022

Every fall, full-time UAF faculty members, postdoctoral researchers and graduate students from all disciplines and campuses are eligible to apply for awards of up to $6,000 for mentoring undergraduate research and scholarly learning opportunities.

Funding options include; fellowships for undergraduate students, travel for undergraduate students, as well as supplies and/or services to help support undergraduate research and scholarly activity initiatives.

  • Deadline to apply is September 11, 2022.

  • Individuals receiving awards must have their mentored students participate in Research and Creative Activity Day on April 6, 2023 and complete an evaluation. 

  • Applicants are limited to two Mentor Awards every three years.

  • Students selected to be part of the projects:
    • Must ave a GPA of 2.3 and above
    • Must be registered for at least 6 credits in Fall 2022 and  Spring 2023
    • CANNOT be a Student Project Award recipient during the same academic year.

  • Funds up to $6,000

  • Funds must be spent no later than June 15, 2023.

Scoring Criteria


  • FELLOWSHIPS
    For degree-seeking undergraduate students taking at least six credits during the fall and spring semesters.

  • REGISTRATION FEES
    For undergraduate student(s) to attend a virtual conference/workshop or other professional meeting.

  • SUPPLIES/SERVICES
    To support the undergraduate research project or creative activities (MUST be spent by June 15, 2023).
  • Purpose of the activity or purchase with respect to potential for undergraduate research or scholarly activity as a result of the funding. History of undergraduate student mentoring or a desire to initiate mentoring activities.

  • Each application is reviewed by four members of the URSA Review Panel, a group of faculty members from from all disciplines in the arts/humanities/social sciences, natural/life, and engineering sciences.
  • To support/create a multi-student, repeating, research opportunity for undergraduates
  • To support/create a one-time multiple student research opportunity for undergraduates

  • The explanation of the significance of the proposed project or travel is.
  • The potential for the proposed project or travel to make a scholarly contribution to an academic discipline.
  • The potential for the proposed project or travel to bring about an improvement in higher education at UAF (and beyond).
  • The written quality of the proposal.
  • The applicant articulates clear goals and/or expected student learning outcomes of the project or travel.
  • The applicant, through articulate writing and inclusion of detail, makes a compelling case for funding the project or travel.
  • The applicant articulates a clear mentoring plan.
  • The applicant proposes an appropriate budget for the project.
