Green in the Dorms

Suggested items:

  • Organic sheets, blanket, towel and pillow
    • The three items above may sometimes be hard to find locally in Fairbanks but are easy to order online. Another alternative is going to 2nd hand stores. It is just as helpful to support businesses that reduce what gets wasted.
  • Organic cleaning supplies
    • Seventh Generation is a popular brand. They are easy to find in any large grocery store.
  • Organic cosmetics
  • Organic shower products
    • Dr. Bronner and Burt's Bees are two brands that are recommended by many, you can find them in any organic section.
  • Smart power strip
    • This is a power strip that has a wonderful little switch that will cut the electricity flow to all its outlets making it simple and easy to save energy while you sleep.
  • Reusable dishes
    • These come in handy more than you would think, keep a set around; you can find cheap dishes and silverware at Value Village or any 2nd hand thrift store.
  • Reusable coffee mug and water bottle
    • The UAF bookstore carries both of these items. One benefit to having a mug is the discounts you can get at coffee places around campus. Also, having a water bottle means you can fill up at the filtered water station on the main floor of Wood Center, best water on campus.
  • Cloth shopping bag
    • This is a fantastic way to dramatically reduce the amount of plastic bags that pile up after shopping. It can also double as a book bag or lunch sack. You can find these at the UAF bookstore as well.
  • Plants
    • Plants are a great way to brighten a room, the 5th floor of Rasmuson sometimes has clippings out for the taking and clippings can live just in water for long periods of time. So all you need is a cup.
  • Recycled paper notebook and other school supplies
    • You can sometimes find these items at the UAF bookstore, otherwise poke around and you're bound to run into them. What a great feeling it is to take notes on recycled paper.
  • Homemade poster
    • Get together with friends and make your own room decorations.
