Become the future of the nation’s coordinated disaster response efforts
In the post-9/11 environment, emergency management and homeland security professionals
face many new challenges. As the frequency and complexity of man-made, natural and
technological disasters increase, so does the need for trained professionals ready
to rise to the challenge.
The UAF Homeland Security and Emergency Management (HSEM) program prepares you for
a career where you will make an impact and shape the growing emergency services field.
HSEM classes are designed to work with your busy schedule. Learn in the way that works
best for you, with online and in-classroom options. Small classes and hands-on opportunities
mean you jump into the community feet first and start making waves.
UAF is one of a few universities with an on-campus fire station staffed by student
employees. For military and veterans, you’ll be close to not one, but two military
bases: Fort Wainwright Army Base and Eielson Air Force Base. As a student in the HSEM
program, you will have opportunities to learn outside the classroom - attend events
and workshops to hone your business skills and refine your emergency services knowledge
by working with emergency managers and participating in field exercises.
In both the online and on-campus classrooms, the HSEM program hosts a student body
with diverse experience. A typical class melds the know-how of students seasoned in
their respective fields. This shared experience lends itself to a deeper and more
relevant classroom environment.
The HSEM program is a member of the FEMA Higher Education Program and the University and Agency Partnership Initiative (UAPI) through the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
The School of Management is extending an offer to waive the application fee for all
students who apply to any School of Management degree program. Use the waiver code
UAFSOM when applying to take advantage of this offer.
