About SNRE

The School of Natural Resources and Extension (SNRE) is the academic home of several degree programs in natural resources management, the Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station and the University of Alaska Fairbanks Cooperative Extension Service.

The School of Natural Resources and Extension provides programs in education, research and outreach that address the science and management of the natural resources and agriculture of Alaska and the circumpolar North. Our programs allow students to pursue undergraduate and graduate degrees in natural resources management. Coursework integrates biological, physical and social sciences, a combination that is required for sustainable management of natural resources to meet human needs for economic, social and environmental well-being.

The research focus is broad, as reflected by our faculty whose profiles you will find here. Their interests include basic and applied research in ecosystems, forest and soil science, sustainable agriculture and forestry, horticulture, community development related to planning, policy, economics and recreation management.

Extension provides research-based outreach to Alaskans in many areas, including community development, agriculture and horticulture, youth development, nutrition, food safety and food preservation, health and family development, natural resources and energy conservation. Extension faculty profiles on this site list areas of interest and specialty.

The range of clients who look to us for assistance is as broad as our research and education programs suggest. State and federal agencies that look to us for assistance include the Alaska Department of Natural Resources, the Alaska Department of Community and Economic Development, the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the National Park Service and the Bureau of Land Management. We also work with farmers and ranchers, gardeners, foresters, recreation managers, school districts, community planners, families and small businesses in an extensive outreach program.
