Drafting / Design Technology

Your education
The drafting technology certificate is a one-year program designed to provide focused training in computer-aided design. The program provides focused education for individuals who have experience in the field and needs to become proficient in the use of computer-aided design (CAD) software.
Courses included in the certificate program will develop proficiency in the use CAD software and develop foundation-level knowledge through one of the following six concentrations: architectural drafting, civil drafting, information technology, mechanical and electrical drafting, process technology, or structural drafting.
The occupational endorsement for Drafting Technician provides education and training to students to qualify for entry level drafting and construction documentation preparation. This 18-credit occupational endorsement may be earned in two semesters and represents a significant portion of the education required for the Drafting Technology Certificate. Students must complete all courses with a grade of C or better in order to earn the endorsement.
This program is open to those who have completed the university application process. It utilizes existing Drafting Technology (DRT) and Construction Management (CM) courses to credential individuals with entry-level training that will get their foot in the door with prospective employers.
Minimum Requirements for Drafting Technology Occupational Endorsement: 18 credits total
Drafting Technology OEC Program Requirements:
- CM F102 Methods of Building Construction (3 credits)
- DRT F140 Architectural Drafting (3 credits)
- DRT F170 Beginning CAD (3 credits)
- DRT F210 Intermediate CAD (3 credits)
Plus complete two of the following for 6 additional credits = 18 credits total required
- CM F123 Codes and Standards (3 credits)
- DRT F145 Structural Drafting (3 credits)
- DRT F150 Civil Drafting (3 credits)
- DRT F155 Mechanical and Electrical Drafting (3 credits)
- DSGN F130 Modeling, Assembly & 3D Animation: Autodesk Inventor (3 credits)

Your career
Drafters develop clear, complete and accurate working plans, maps, and detailed drawings based on rough sketches and specifications furnished by engineers, architects, or designers. Computer-aided design (CAD) and Building Information Modeling (BIM) systems are the principal tool used to prepare technical drawings.
Graduates will develop the technical CAD skills, as well as the design and construction knowledge needed to communicate with future employers in the architectural, engineering and construction fields.
Drafters can work for architectural, engineering or construction firms, government agencies, mining firms and manufacturing industries.

Program delivery
Delivery:
Program courses are offered through in-person classes.
Scheduling:
Courses are available in the evening to accommodate students who are currently employed.
When to Start:
Students can start their program in fall, spring or summer semester.
Location:
Program is located in downtown Fairbanks at the UAF Community & Technical College, 604 Barnette Street building. This location contains spacious classrooms, computer labs, tutors and learning center and comprehensive student services and support.

Program highlights
Students in the drafting technology program take courses taught by professionals from the architectural, engineering and construction communities. Students develop skills in mathematics, drawing and lettering, building concepts and design, and construction techniques utilizing conventional drawing techniques, computer-aided drafting (CAD) and building information modeling (BIM).
Class sizes are small to encourage student-instructor interaction and to allow for individualized assistance. Most classes are held in the evening to meet the needs of students who are currently employed.

Other details
Students entering the programs are expected to have computer skills equivalent to CIOS F150.
