Professor of Psychology, Posthumous Emeritus

WHEREAS Dr. Gerald Mohatt served the University of Alaska Fairbanks with distinction in teaching, research and public service from 1983 to 2010; and

WHEREAS Dr. Mohatt was instrumental in developing the psychology programs at the University; had a leading role in developing the first Ph.D. program in psychology in the State of Alaska; and advised hundreds of undergraduate and graduate students; and

WHEREAS Dr. Mohatt was an internationally renowned scholar on mental health in American Indian and Alaska Native communities; and was the founding director and principal investigator of the Center for Alaska Native Health Research, which focuses on interdisciplinary community-based health research; and contributed numerous influential articles; and

WHEREAS Dr. Mohatt was honored with the Emil Usibelli Award for Distinguished Research; the Victor E. Howery Award for Contributions to Rural Mental Health by the National Rural Mental Health Association; and an American Book Award, among other awards; and

WHEREAS Dr. Mohatt served as an influential department chair and dean; and contributed his time to a wide range of professional groups concerned with health disparities of minorities;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the University of Alaska Fairbanks expresses its deep appreciation to Dr. Gerald Mohatt for his extensive contributions to the State of Alaska and to the University; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the University of Alaska Fairbanks, in further recognition of the invaluable services rendered by Dr. Mohatt and as evidence of the University’s desire that his identification with the University be maintained, hereby salutes the appointment of Dr. Gerald Mohatt as Professor of Psychology, Posthumous Emeritus; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this resolution be appropriately engrossed and signed by the Chancellor of the University of Alaska Fairbanks as further evidence of the esteem and respect in which he holds Dr. Gerald Mohatt, on this 8th day of May, 2016.
