Dr. Thomas R. Jahns
Professor of Extension, Emeritus
Dr. Thomas R. Jahns has served the University of Alaska Fairbanks with distinction in teaching, research and public service from 1994 to 2012.
His work with the Cooperative Extension Service has reached throughout the entire State, affecting the lives of thousands of Alaskans through countless presentations, publications and distance education. He is passionate about the mission of CES and the role it plays in bettering the lives of Alaska’s citizens through community outreach and education.
He focused primarily on agriculture and horticulture along the Kenai Peninsula, Dr. Jahns’ dedication to his work is most evident when one travels to communities there. He worked with growers in the area to build the foundation of the Alaska Peony Growers Association, an endeavor with the potential for significant economic benefit to the State.
Dr. Jahns is held in high regard by his colleagues for his advice on programs and careers. He has served as a dedicated mentor to junior faculty and provided early career assistance to many who are currently tenured faculty in CES. His wisdom and knowledge was also sought after from the six different Directors of Extension he has worked with over the years.
