Attending Class

New Students

Not only is attending class an important part of attending college, but a critical part of staying in college!  To be successful, you will need to understand the distance delivery technology and have the discipline to attend class as scheduled. Therefore, you need to do the following:

  1. Set your UAF email and blackboard username and password.
    1. Go to Elmo and select Option 3.
    2. Answer all questions and complete the process.
    3. Write down and keep your username, password, and student ID somewhere helpful for you to access. You will need your username and password to log into every UA and UAF program except UAONLINE which utilizes your Student ID as your log-in to UAONLINE and a separate 6-digit PIN (your birthday at first until you change it).
  2. Log into blackboard and make sure you can log into your account using the username and password created above in step 1. If it does not work, contact the UA OIT Office at 907-450-8300.
  3. Log into the UAF Webmail (http://webmail.alaska.edu) and make sure you can log into your account using the username and password created above in step 1. If it does not work, contact the UA OIT Office at 907-450-8300.
    1. Your email address is your username@alaska.edu. For example, if your username to log into your webmail is TESTABC, then your email address will be TESTABC@ALASKA.EDU.
    2. Check your UAF email regularly since this is your university email and teachers, professors, and UAF Administration will use this email to contact you regarding class, your account, homework, and other issues..
    3. If your UAF Email does not work, contact the UA OIT Office at 907-450-8300.
  4. Set-up your UAONLINE Account
    1. UAOnline allows you to access your grades, unofficial transcript, account summary, holds, and MUCH more.
    2. Go to http://uaonline.alaska.edu.
      1. Enter your student ID.
      2. Enter your personal identification number (PIN). This is the same number you have used to register on the web. Your PIN is initially set to your date of birth in the MMDDYY format. For example, June 1, 1977 is 060177; Oct. 19, 1980 is 101980. (If you have already signed in to UAOnline, you have changed your PIN.)
    3. Be sure to keep your UAONLINE username and ID somewhere that you can easily find and remember.
  5. Contact Dick Ellsworth and schedule an orientation to learn to use Blackboard and E-LUMINATE LIVE. All classes utilize the blackboard and E-LUMINATE LIVE computer programs for web-delivery. If you do not schedule an orientation, you will likely have challenges the first day of class. This orientation is designed to avoid problems and allow you maximum participation in the virtual classroom. Dick Ellsworth can be best reached via email at crellsworth@alaska.edu.

Returning Students

  1. Review your class syllabi (usually posted on Blackboard).
  2. Contact Chukchi if any of your classes do not show-up on your blackboard page.
  3. Set your calendar and be sure you know the drop and withdrawl deadlines!
  4. Show-up to class.
