Cheryl earned a B.S. in Marine Biology from San Diego State University in 2006. After traveling and working in the nonprofit sector for a few years, she began working on her M.S. in Fisheries and Conservation Biology at Moss Landing Marine Laboratories (MLML). Her master's thesis involved estimating growth, reproductive potential, and mortality of California Halibut (Paralichthys californicus) as well as evaluating biogeographic effects on the biology of this locally important species. During her time at MLML, Cheryl also served as a program representative for California Sea Grant and lead scientist for the California Collaborative Fisheries Research Program, which conducts long-term monitoring of central California's marine protected areas. In 2015, Cheryl began working on her PhD through the College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences at University of Alaska Fairbanks. Located at the Juneau Fisheries Division, she is working to calculate an index of predation for Walleye Pollock (Gadus chalcogrammus) that is expected to improve the Gulf of Alaska stock assessment for this species. She is also investigating the potential for competition between Pacific Halibut (Hippoglossus stenolepis) and Arrowtooth Flounder (Atheresthes stomias) to enhance our understanding about the ecological interactions among important groundfish predators.

Research Overview
I am interested in working closely with resource managers and members of industry to collect biological and ecological data to inform fisheries management practices.
Current Research Projects
  • Changes in ecological processes can have substantial and long-lasting effects on the population dynamics of marine fishes. Although they can greatly affect stock biomass and community structure, fluctuations in predation intensity, competitive interactions, and environmental conditions are not explicitly included in contemporary stock assessment models. Using bottom trawl data collected by the Alaska Fisheries Science Center (AFSC
  • 1990 to 2015), I will quantify spatiotemporal variation in predation on Walleye Pollock (Gadus chalcogrammus) by four major groundfish predators (Pacific Halibut [Hippoglossus stenolepis], Arrowtooth Flounder [Atheresthes stomias], Pacific Cod [Gadus macrocephalus], and adult pollock) in the Gulf of Alaska. A time-varying index of predation for Walleye Pollock will be used as a modifier of natural mortality in the Gulf of Alaska stock assessment. I will also quantify spatial and dietary overlap between Pacific Halibut and Arrowtooth Flounder by analyzing AFSC trawl data from the western and central Gulf of Alaska and by conducting a small-scale field study in Southeast Alaska. This assessment of resource partitioning between Pacific Halibut and Arrowtooth Flounder will serve as a first step toward testing the hypothesis that competition with an increasing Arrowtooth Flounder population has limited Pacific Halibut growth in recent years. Both components of this research are expected to enhance our understanding of complex interactions among economically and ecologically important species in the Gulf of Alaska and contribute to the development of management plans that improve fishery sustainability.
